- Definition of a long take: Anything significantly longer than the norm (for its time and place) (E.g. in the 40’s, anything over 9 seconds is considered a long take)(examples: “Rope” and “Nine Lives”)
- Deep focus photography: It is a photo or a shot focused in the foreground, the middle ground and the background in focus. It is used in long takes and/or a stablishing shot. Its definition is “keeps several planes of shot in focus at the same time”. It is used since several actions can be filmed at the same time. It saves up editing time.
Long Take on Citizen Kane
Positives | Negatives |
- Shows the image how the father does not want Kane to leave
- Camera comes back in order to establish deep focus shot. This creates a movement feeling.
- Camera stops. Static feeling focuses on the people
- It has a composition that shows how the mother is in the front, symbolising as the most important people in the family
- Triangular composition and camera moves. It follows the mother, establishing her importance in the family.
- Camera follows the woman and then cuts to the woman. She is full faced which keeps implying that she is important. It focuses on her face since she seems numb, helping the viewer see how she feels.
- Deep take shots keep on focus on the scene, which helps making it an establishing shot and an action shot all in one.
- No need for editing and little camera movement.
- Fixes attention
- Demonstrate acting skills
- You cannot escape
| - No adrenaline
- Can get monotonous/boring
- Not much change
- Too much of the same sense
- Can make the viewer feel too uninvolved.
- Can feel like a establishing shot.
